Jeremy Lipps is a writer, independent historian, and digital communications professional from Northern California, and the creator and host of Mexica: A History Podcast.
Background
My mother is Mexican, and Mexico has been a constant in my life: dozens of visits over the years, from small family gatherings to long days in the museums of Mexico City. The Conquest was the story I kept coming back to, and eventually I started telling it myself.
How I work
I’m an independent historian, which means I work from the sources rather than from a university post. For Mexica, that means reading Spanish eyewitnesses such as Bernal Díaz del Castillo and Andrés de Tapia alongside indigenous accounts like the Florentine Codex and the Annals of Tlatelolco, and noting where they agree, where they conflict, and where the evidence simply runs out. My day job in digital communications shapes the other half of the work: turning dense source material into storytelling people want to follow.
Other work
I also wrote Badfish: Story of a Punk, a biographical stage play about Sublime frontman Bradley Nowell. Nowell’s iconic California sound, his success and self-awareness of his own impending doom led me to interview his father, the late Jim Nowell.
